Independent of the Dyke March, Dykes on Bikes is another riotous rally for queer women around this city -- but this time, it happens on motorcycles. This is another one of those great Gay Pride weekend events that grew up organically, beginning in the late seventies when a bunch of women on motorcycles showed up to ride at the head of the Pride Parade. Since then, the event has grown into hundreds of participants who have an event in their own right. These motorcycle mamas ride right past my window on Castro Street, and every year when the air fills with rumbles and roars I go scooting outside to check out the gorgeous bikes of all descriptions. This still has the feel of a spontaneous event thrown by and for the community, and it's a great way to meet some nice folks and see a fun show.
